Restorative yoga is a gentle, nurturing style of yoga designed to promote deep physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. This practice emphasises stillness, mindful breathing, and supported poses that are held for extended periods, allowing the body to fully rest and enter relaxation.
During the class, the focus is on activating the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the "rest and digest" system, which helps counterbalance the "fight or flight" stress response. This activation promotes a state of calm, supporting better sleep, and overall stress reduction.
Restorative yoga can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), improve heart rate variability (a marker of nervous system health), and enhance immune system function.
This is a floor-based class, accessible to all levels, including those with no prior yoga experience. The use of props such as cushions, blankets, and bolsters ensures optimal comfort and support for each pose. These props help facilitate deep relaxation by minimising muscular effort and encouraging passive stretching.
All equipment required for the class is provided. However, for an enhanced experience, you may wish to bring an eye mask or a scarf to cover your eyes, which can aid in achieving a deeper state of relaxation.
