'Here comes the sun': Bill McKibben's view of a solar-powered future
McKibben shows how solar power offers more than climate solutions — it's a chance to reorder the world on saner, more humane grounds.

About this Event

Climate change feels overwhelming. Despite decades of warnings, carbon emissions keep rising, extreme weather worsens, and many of us wonder if it’s already too late to make a meaningful difference.

Are you someone who cares deeply about our planet’s future but feels stuck between climate despair and the desire to take real action?

Join the Explorer and Bill McKibben for a reading and discussion of his new book, ''

Over the last two years, solar has become the fastest growing energy source in human history, mostly because we now live on a planet where the cheapest way to make power is to point a sheet of glass at the sun.

In 'Here Comes the Sun,' McKibben tells the story of this sudden spike in renewable power and the fossil fuel industry's desperate fight to hold it back. From everyday citizens installing solar panels to California nearly halving its natural gas use in just two years, he traces the arrival of plentiful, inexpensive solar energy.

McKibben shows how solar power offers more than climate solutions — it's a chance to reorder the world on saner, more humane grounds. You can't hoard sunlight or hold it in reserves. It's available to all.

About Bill McKibben

Bill McKibben is founder of Third Act, which organizes people over age 60 for action on climate and justice. His 1989 book "The End of Nature" is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change, and has appeared in 24 languages. He's written 20 books, and his work appears regularly in publications from The New Yorker to Rolling Stone.

McKibben helped found 350.org, the first global grassroots climate campaign, which organized protests on every continent, including Antarctica. He played a leading role in opposing major oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL and launching the fossil fuel divestment campaign — now the biggest anti-corporate campaign in history, with endowments worth more than $40 trillion stepping back from oil, gas and coal.

He serves as Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has won the Gandhi Peace Prize. Foreign Policy named him to its list of the world's 100 most important global thinkers. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife, writer Sue Halpern.
