About the Show:
Whether you've done theatre before or this is your very first time, this is a great show to jump into. It’s playful, over-the-top, and meant to make people laugh.
The Importance of Being Earnest is a fast-moving comedy about people pretending to be someone they’re not—mostly to impress other people, fall in love, and avoid awkward conversations. It’s full of quick jokes, silly mix-ups, and characters who take themselves way too seriously.
Imagine if your most dramatic friend got stuck in a room with your nosiest aunt, your chill cousin with a wild imagination, and someone who’s lying about their name—but trying not to get caught. That’s the vibe.
The show was written over 100 years ago, but it still hits today—especially if you like smart humor, a little bit of chaos, and big characters who say exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Character Breakdown:
We’re looking for a fun, diverse group of people to bring these characters to life. You don’t need to “look the part” or match some outdated description. What matters most is your energy, curiosity, and willingness to play. All roles are open to anyone, and we’ll cast based on what works best together as a group.
Here’s a description of the characters in the show:

Jack: usually late 20s to late 30s, but age is less important than being more grounded and “grown up” than Algy. A pretty responsible guy—most of the time. He is Cecily’s guardian, but he has a secret second life where he pretends to be someone named “Ernest” so he can sneak off and have fun. He has a big heart, is a little uptight, and constantly tries to keep everything from falling apart.

Algernon (“Algy”): usually late 20s to mid 30s, but it’s really about swagger, mischief, and charisma. He is Jack’s best friend and partner in crime. He’s all charm, snacks, and drama. He loves to stir the pot and see what happens. He thinks rules are optional.

Gwendolen: usually mid 20s to early 30s, but can be younger or older if played by someone who has style, smarts, and 100% knows what she wants. She’s in love with someone named Ernest… and very attached to that name. She’s not great at compromising, but always entertaining.

Cecily: usually late teens to mid 20s, but can be older or younger if played with wide-eyed curiosity and playfulness. She is Jack’s ward. She’s sweet and has a big imagination. She’s been writing in her diary about a romance that doesn’t actually exist—yet. She dreams a lot and has a streak of wildness in her.

Lady Bracknell: usually 50+, but age is less important than a commanding presence. She is Gwendolen’s mother and the queen of judgment. She’s fancy, opinionated, and used to getting her way. Totally in charge of the room. Could be played very seriously—or hilariously over-the-top. Can be played by any gender.

Miss Prism: usually 40+, but balancing nervous energy with heart and humor is more important than age. She is Cecily’s teacher. Proper, and always trying to do the right thing… even though she once made a very big mistake. She has a surprising side.

Rev. Chasuble: usually the same age as Miss Prism (40+), but chemistry and timing matter more than age. He is the local minister. He is kind, calm, and not totally sure how he ended up in the middle of all this. He has a soft spot for Miss Prism.

Lane / Merriman: can be any age. They are the butlers. They have dry humor and say a lot with just a look. They keep things moving, even when the people around them are being ridiculous. One actor could play both.

What to Prepare:
We want to see you! If you have a short monologue (1-3 minutes)—great! It can be memorized or read, comic or classic, totally your choice. If not, come in ready to tell us a story: a childhood memory, a weird dream, a moment that made you laugh—anything that shows your presence and personality. The key is, don’t do what you think we want you to do. Do something that you will have fun doing!
Please also bring a picture and resume if you have one. If not, no problem—we’ll take your picture at the audition.
Need an accommodation? Just let us know—we’re committed to creating an accessible, welcoming audition space.
