About the Show:
Lord Of The Flies, first published as a novel in 1954, is an enduring story that continues to attract audiences today because of its trenchant and timely observations about human nature.
Crash-landed on a remote island, a group of students struggle to govern themselves—with devastating results. This powerful stage adaptation is a haunting exploration of power, survival, and the thin line between order and chaos.
This production offers youth performers the opportunity to play complicated characters who all go through alarming transformations and reveal the enduring dangers of tribalism that feel alarmingly relevant today.
Character Breakdown:
This production of Lord of the Flies will be cast “blind” - actors do not need to match the gender, age, race, or description of the character in the novel or script. We’re looking for talented performers who can use their acting skills to convey these characters’ stories, and for a cohesive cast that works well together.
The Characters (ages 13-19):
RALPH - Quickly asserts himself as popular and athletic, and thus is selected as the leader of the group. Curious and optimistic but with a streak of harsh immaturity. Brave. His greatest strength as a leader is his awareness of his own shortcomings.
PIGGY - Deeply intelligent, visionary, and perceptive but mortally lacking in charisma. Moody, sensitive, lower class, prone to I-told-you-so’s. He is the brain behind Ralph’s charm and is the most concerned with rescue.
JACK - Leader of the choir, which makes him feel entitled to lead the group. When he doesn’t get this honor, becomes dangerous. Bossy, ruthless, wheedling, obsessed with the letter of the law over the spirit of actual decency. His childish insecurity fuels his worst impulses toward bullying.
ROGER - Jack’s second in command. Wily, manipulative, pretend subservience masking an absolute cruelty. An agitator of emotions and conflicts. Always seems to come out of messes smelling like roses.
SIMON - Mysterious and mystical. Attuned to nature, prone to visions and portents, focused on spiritual questions than the concerns of survival. Doesn’t fit in well to the earthly squabbles of the other islanders.
SAM - Eric’s sibling. They are bonded by something stronger than blood. Impressionable, excitable, at times cowardly in the face of a strong personality. Eric makes him braver but also crueler.
ERIC - Sam’s sibling. They are bonded by something stronger than blood. The more hesitant of the two, but still eager and hysterical when situations get heated. Sam’s moods infect him.
MAURICE - The clown. Amiable and silly when times are good and crude, dim, prone to impulse and brutishness when they aren’t. Shows moral fiber when pushed to his limits.
BILL - Plays second banana to Maurice. Good-natured and playful, but also a coarse lunkhead. His natural impulse toward going with the flow leads him down dangerous paths.
HENRY - Dangerously impressionable - totally at the mercy of stronger personalities. Follows whichever leader seems the most fun or charismatic and is eager to lend his hands to a mission without thought.
PERCEVAL - The youngest of all. Naïve and imaginative, sees a game in every disagreement and lethal danger in every shadow. Possesses a heartbreaking clarity of perception that cuts through others’ hidden motives.
NAVAL OFFICER - The adult. Authoritative and unenlightened. Embodies all that which the children fear about themselves and their mysterious island.
