Rhythms of Resistance: Internment, Identity & the Power of Taiko | Wednesday, May 21st, 6:30-8pm

Join us for an evening of dialogue and drumming, highlighting the power of art to build resilience and community.

The evening will begin with a conversation between Karen Falkenstrom, Director of Odaiko Sonora, and Dr. Kate Alexander, Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Arizona and Board Member of Kol Ami Synagogue. They will discuss themes of resilience, resistance, art-making, and identity.

Following this conversation, Odaiko Sonora will present one of their award-winning taiko performances. Odaiko Sonora (OS) is Tucson’s largest taiko (Japanese ensemble drumming) group. Serving Southern Arizona since May 2002, the group is dedicated to increasing familiarity with and understanding of taiko in our community. The evening will conclude with a reception featuring food and drinks, providing an opportunity for audience members to meet, mingle, and chat with Odaiko Sonora.

Additionally, in honor of AAPI Heritage Month, audiences are invited to explore a traveling Smithsonian exhibition on Japanese American internment camps, which will be on display throughout May at the Tucson J.
