The Artistry Lounge series is meant to foster an open space for students to discuss and practice the dance; the goal is to build fundamentals and an approach that accentuates creative expression. Each class will have a pre-selected topic, starting off with a guided discussion and experimentation.
Why a guided discussion and experimentation format? Here's one of our perspectives:
1. Learn: As a true beginner, you go to class to learn, because there’s information that you need to hear before you can start doing the activity, such as basic timing, redirection, stop, and basic handhold. This stage is small, because there’s only so much information you need to hear and learn within each fundamental topic.
2. Develop, Practice and Master Fundamentals: At this stage, it’s very important to hear and share: Leaders need to hear the Follower’s side, Followers need to hear the Leader’s side. Then, the goal is to develop a deeper understanding of and practice to master fundamental concepts and topics such as timing, space, balance, etc. This stage is very long, because without mastery of core fundamental topics, you can’t express with intention. For example, think of it as having learnt vocabulary without a mastery of grammar, but trying to craft your own sentences.
3. Learn: Once you’ve spent years practicing, mastering and developing knowledge of core fundamental topics, then you’re likely now at a high division competitively and/or have a significantly deeper understanding of the dance. Now, you are ready to learn nuanced scenarios and complex concepts.
4. Develop, Practice and Master Nuance: Once you’ve spent time hearing and learning about nuanced scenarios and complex concepts, it’s time to train and navigate these within your dance.
We will focus on stage 2 of this journey - Develop, Practice, Master Fundamentals - to help you engrain these concepts in your body and progress them into creative expression. As an attendee, your goal is to share your thoughts and hear from other attendees who primarily dance the same role, from attendees who primarily dance the opposite role, and from instructors. Then, it’s to practice and master these concepts in a controlled setting.
