BARN BURNER shows are all about the dancing! No matter who might be on the stage, you are guaranteed to groove. The Whylands will kick the evening off; warming up the dance floor with their folk, chamber pop, indie blended tunes. Then Kathryn Claire and other fiddle friends will take over with old timey fiddle shred tunes to burn it down.
THE WHYLANDS
The Portland-based project The Whyland, led by Kathryn Claire has a raw, luminous, and ever-evolving sound that exists at the intersection of folk, chamber pop, indie, and something entirely their own. It’s a space built on collaboration, vulnerability, and fearless exploration.
At the heart of the band is Kathryn Claire: a violinist, guitarist, and vocalist whose stage presence radiates both fire and grace. Her voice cuts with clarity and warmth, while her violin playing—sometimes soaring, sometimes whisper-soft—brings the emotional architecture of each song into focus. Her music draws from a deep well of classical and traditional influences, shaped by years of performance and collaboration around the globe. As the band’s creative anchor, Kathryn brings authenticity and emotional depth to every song.
But The Whylands is more than a solo project with a backing band. This is a deeply collaborative unit, with every member—Allen Hunter on bass, Sid Ditson on violin, and Mark Powers on drums—bringing their full creative selves into the mix.
Each member contributes a distinct musical voice to the ensemble. Their chemistry is palpable, and the joy they find in playing together is contagious. Whether in an intimate listening room or a festival stage, they build a communal space that feels sacred, spontaneous, and deeply human.
The Whylands is not just a band—it’s a sonic landscape where genre lines blur and emotional truths are explored through melody and harmony.
