As an artist and researcher, Dr. Laurel Jay Carpenter examines longing, awe and intimacy, while troubling subjectivity, in her durational live works. She has performed at art centers, festivals and in public space internationally since 1992; notable sites include a castle moat in Salem (DE), the mechanical room for the National Palace of Culture in Sofia (BG), the length of 14th Street in Manhattan (US), the Arsenale at the Venice Biennale (IT), and a Georgian-era covered market in Newcastle (UK). More recently, Carpenter’s practice has expanded to include video and textiles, premiering at a solo exhibition at Galerie Oberwelt in Stuttgart, DE in 2023. She is currently a Professor and Head of the Art Department at East Texas A&M University, USA.
Terese Longva works across various mediums, including performance, video and installation. Her practice explores processes of transformation, using the body and bodily experiences as a starting point. She received a BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and an MA from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design. She has exhibited in galleries and festivals in Norway and internationally, including Høstutstillingen, The National Museum (Norway), Kunsthall 3,14, the Art Nouveau Center, and KUBE.
Together as Longva+Carpenter, the artists have presented their durational, sculptural performances at the Festspillene i Bergen, the Prague Quadrennial, and galleries from Buffalo, NY to Essen, DE. Their monograph, 10 Together won the Best Publication Award at PQ2023. Over many years, the collaborators have cultivated a shared investigation of personal longings, feminist ideologies and political urgencies.
