The Spanish Armada in Kerry - Lunchtime talk by Rob Vance

English fire-power overwhelmed the Spanish Armada of 1588, the greatest naval expedition in history.
The fleet escaped northwards, taking its huge army of 30,000 Spanish soldiers, waiting to ‘fight in God’s cause’ around the top of Scotland… and into a hurricane.
News reached London that great numbers of Spanish galleons were being seen off the northern and western coasts of Ireland. The Court of Elizabeth was stunned. Would the Spanish link up with the rebellious Catholic population and become Ireland’s liberators?
This illustrated talk will explore the tumultuous background to this immense expedition and its fate upon the rocky coasts of the West and South west of Ireland.
