Scarecrow is bored with being stuck in his field, arms fixed wide. The crows are not scared of him anyway – in fact they have made a cosy nest in his hat. When Farmer Geenie frees him by accident one day he discovers – hay! – he can finally move! He finds that the world around him is full of wonderful surprises and with Geenie’s help learns all about the birds and the bees, how to walk, dance, sing and find his place in the world..
What Geenie doesn’t know is that Scarecrow has a secret dream. He doesn’t really want to scare the crows. He wants to be like them, spread his arms wide and fly. This is a show about discovering all the wonders of the world for the first time and how to live with them in harmony. There are no words but it’s packed full of meaning, music and movement and a cavalcade of captivating costumes.
A highly accessible show filled with music, clowning, song and dance.
There is only one word used in our show – it’s ‘Hay!’ Like the stuffing in Geenie’s scarecrow, ‘Hay!’ like the sound she makes when he comes to life and ‘Hay!’ when he sees all the wonders of the natural world for the first time. Only one word but so many meanings in a show about growing up in the heart of the countryside and discovering that you don’t have to stay stuck in the mud – you can live your dreams, spread your wings and fly like the birds.
In this beautiful story Farmer Geenie guides scarecrow step by step as he finds his feet, then his hands, his voice, his legs and his love of song and dance in a story about the fun of growing up where every moment there’s something new to make you say ‘Hay!’ We’ve got charming puppets – birds, butterflies and bees – and some very wonderful eggs each with their own particular surprises.
This show is highly accessible and perfect for a younger age group who will be giggling all the way through this gentle introduction to what theatre can be -sweet, funny, inclusive and uplifting. For those who know the countryside, this show will be full of shared moments and for those who aren’t so familiar with our green spaces, they will want to continue the journey they will start with this show into how best to live in harmony and protect our environment.
