WHERE ARE WE THIS WEEK-September 4-6th?
Thursday at Glasgow New Castle County Farmers Market 3-7; Friday at Bellevue Farmer's Market 3-7; SATURDAY September 6th, 9 am-2 pm AT THE NURSERY 209 Paddock Road Smyrna/Townsend
FALL FOCUS PLANT HIGHLIGHTS AT THE NURSERY:
SMOOTH BLUE ASTER (we also have a number of other asters)- Is a Keystone Plant and stands 3-4 feet. It prefers average to wet soil, but can also handle moist to dry. The leaves on Smooth Blue Aster are indeed smooth to the touch. The tough stem often takes on a shade of blue also and will allow Smooth Blue Aster to stand tall during its long late summer to mid fall bloom. A non-aggressive rhizomatous root system allows the plant to spread slowly. In a garden setting, Smooth Blue Aster will persist for many years.
The beautiful late blooming flowers attract many different pollinators. Smooth Blue Aster is also a host plant for the Silvery Checkerspot and the Pearl Crescent butterflies.
HYSSOP-LEAVED THOROUGHWORT- Looks great along with Asters and Goldenrods. It stands 2-3 feet and blooms August-September. Eupatorium hyssopifolium blooms in bursts of white flowers throughout a meadow. It prefers drier growing conditions, but can handle wetter ones so long as the site is well-drained. Like other Eupatoriums, Hyssop-leaved thoroughwort is a host plant for the Clymene moth.
