About the event

Philosophy and a Pint @ The Bay Horse ~ Value and Ethics: What Really Matters — and How Do We Know?
“Only once we begin to understand what value truly is can we start to explore ethics—because without knowing what matters, we can’t meaningfully decide what’s right.”

What is Value?

Can we truly thrive—either as individuals or a society—without understanding what’s valuable in life? Or even more fundamentally, what value itself really is?
This session of Philosophy and a Pint invites us to explore that question together. In doing so, we’re already engaging with something valuable: reflection, connection, and meaning-making. And yet, in our modern capitalist world, the meaning of value is often pre-decided for us—narrowed to what can be owned, taxed, sold, or measured in economic terms.

As the Gaulist philospher Asterix once said: “These Romans are crazy!”

Karl Marx, in his critique of capitalism, drew attention to a core contradiction between use-value and exchange-value—the difference between something’s real usefulness and its role as a commodity. Today, that contradiction plays out when governments and corporations put price tags on the right to pollute oceans, fell forests, or poison the air.

In contrast, John Stuart Mill proposed that value might lie in what brings the greatest happiness to the greatest number—a utilitarian framework that still shapes many political debates.

But is value always about comparison, outcomes, or opinion? Could it point toward something deeper—perhaps even essential or mystical?

Is value a human construct, or a fundamental quality of being?

Bring your thoughts, questions, and curiosity—and let’s explore this together over a pint.

This event is part of the monthly Totnes: Let’s Be Rational series, featuring alternating sessions of 'Philosophy and a Pint' and 'Skeptics in the Pub'
