About the event

Unhoused people are our neighbours too: A community learning series
A community learning series to learn and discuss issues of homelessness and housing with experts all over the city!

About this Event

The Etobicoke-Lakeshore Shelter Support Coalition invites curious neighbours to learn together about issues of homelessness and housing from seasoned experts around the city in this series of productive and interactive workshops.

You're welcome to join all three workshops or whichever workshop would suit your needs the best.

There will be light dinner and snacks provided from local businesses in New Toronto!

Workshop #1: The reality of homelessness in Toronto

Thursday, Oct. 9 - 5:30-7:30pm

Homelessness is one of the most polarizing issues in the city, but what are ACTUALLY the facts and data around homelessness in Toronto? What are some common misconceptions about homelessness and unhoused people—and what's the reality behind the stereotypes?

This workshop is for those who don't know where to begin in learning when hearing about homelessness, are afraid to say the 'wrong' thing or feel just plain uncomfortable around the topic. Let's get those questions out in the open and talk about them in a safe, open discussion.

Facilitator: Melanie Joy, Toronto Drop-In Network

Workshop #2: Basics of harm reduction

Thursday, Oct. 16 - 5:30-7:30pm

"Harm reduction" might sound like a scary phrase...but it doesn't have to be! Join this workshop to learn about how harm reduction actually saves lives and helps curb the impact of the toxic drug crisis on the streets. Come with an open mind and bring your raw questions to experts who understand this controversial topic firsthand.

Facilatator: Harm Reduction Action Collective

Workshop #3: Supporting people on the streets

Wednesday, Oct. 22 - 5:30-7:30pm

So, you're well-informed on the state of homelessness and housing—now what? This workshop will provide information and tips on how to engage with someone who is street-involved to better meet mutual needs. We'll learn together about how to reduce the stigma and criminalization of unhoused folks within our communities. You'll also learn practical skills on avoiding confrontation and de-escalation of situations involving street-involved folks.

Facilitator: Marianne Kozinets and Katrin Clouse, Toronto Drop-In Network
