Our most popular workshop is back! Join us for our first of two annual seed cleaning workshops on Saturday, November 22, from 10 am to 2 pm and enjoy a FREE LUNCH.
And the best part? Katie Mathieu will be making a glorious return to TPM as event chef!
You and up to 50 pollinator/plant people will help us clean up 60+ species of native plants that grow in the Toronto Seed Orchard (TSO)! Led by Jonas Spring of Ecoman and the TSO, this event will teach you about resilient native plants and seed cleaning while communing with fellow plant people! Not to mention the free lunch provided by Katie Mathieu!
This is a FREE event. We will have a donation jar, with all proceeds going to World Central Kitchen.
WHEN Saturday, November 22. 10 am - 2 pm
WHERE: 327 Bering in our 1980s greenhouse.
Jonas Spring will be leading a conversation around the Toronto Seed Orchard, the role of resilient plants in climate work, and how we can continue to create a stable supply of native plants that can thrive in our cities.
WHAT IS THE TORONTO SEED ORCHARD?
The Toronto Seed Orchard (TSO) is a one-acre plot of land at NVK nurseries (Dundas, ON). Verified and local native seed is grown, tended and then harvested by volunteers to provide a stable, secure supply of ethically and locally-sourced native seed for commercial and community use. Our goal is to create an accessible resource of perennial plant seeds that thrive in cities and built environments.
The project aims to address current challenges to commercial seed supply for landscape professionals, including meeting increased demand from public, private, and non-profit sectors.
The TSO also aims to mitigate the impact on the naturalized areas of the Canadian Carolinian zone, the fragmentation and degradation of which make continued harvesting of wild seed unsustainable.
A brainchild of the Ad Hoc Toronto Seed Strategy Working Group, the Toronto Seed Orchard was established in early summer 2022 at NVK nurseries, with guidance from Stefan Weber and financial support from WWF Canada and Mitacs.
Over 1200 plants were planted at NVK by Design Climate Action members and monitoring has been led by seed expert, Liam Doyle .
Species selection was developed using plant lists supplied by the city of Toronto and Ontario Plant Restoration Alliance and curated by Jonas Spring and Karen May !
We are excited to welcome you to learn and hang out with other plant people! Free lunch, uplifting social times. See you at Toronto Plant Market!
