Join journalist and lawyer Caryma Sa’d for an in-depth conversation about the challenges of policing protests in Toronto.

Since 2023, the overpass at Avenue & 401 and intersection at Bathurst & Sheppard have been case studies on competing demonstrations related to the Israel–Palestine conflict. These small but symbolically charged locations have evolved into a microcosm of global tensions, drawing large crowds, counter protests, and significant police deployments.

This event will explore:

• Why these sites became magnets for political expression
• How demonstrations and counter demonstrations have strained public resources
• The efficacy of policing operations
• Impacts on residents, including concerns about safety, access, and quality of life
• Broader questions about civil liberties, public order, and the role of law enforcement

Drawing on her on-the-ground reporting, legal expertise, and real-world examples, Caryma will explore what these protests reveal about civic engagement, community tensions, and the limits of current policing.
