About this Event

On behalf of Susan Peacock and the family of the late Honourable Justice Roger T. Hughes, KC, we are pleased to invite you to the second annual Justice Roger T. Hughes Memorial Lecture in Intellectual Property Law.

The event will take place at the Federal Court of Canada in downtown Toronto on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00pm.

The IP Innovation Clinic is honoured to continue this annual tribute to the legacy of Justice Hughes, a distinguished figure in intellectual property (IP) law. His pioneering work helped shape Canada’s IP landscape, and his influence continues to resonate through the legal community, academic institutions, and the many people he inspired.

Justice Hughes was a cherished friend and collaborator on several IP initiatives at Osgoode Hall Law School. He frequently presented to the students in the IP Innovation Clinic’s Intellectual Property Law & Technology Intensive ("IP Intensive") Program Seminar Series. He was also a founding member of the IP Osgoode advisory board, a judge for the annual IP Writing Challenge, and an adjunct professor for the Litigating IP Cases seminar, which he established.

Professor Graeme Dinwoodie, University Distinguished Professor and Global Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Chicago-Kent College of Law at Illinois Institute of Technology will deliver this year’s guest lecture, “Trademark Law after Jack Daniel’s: A Rye Assessment with a Canadian Aftertaste.”

The evening will also feature remarks from The Honourable Justice Angela Furlanetto, Justice of the Federal Court of Canada and ex officio member of the Federal Court of Appeal, and Daniel Bereskin, C.M, K.C, Principal at Smart & Biggar LP. Professor Pina D’Agostino, DPhil, Founder and Director of the IP Innovation Clinic, is the event’s organizing chair.

The schedule for the evening is as follows:

4:00pm - Welcome Refreshments and Networking

4:30pm - Speeches and Lectures

6:00pm - Continued Networking and Refreshments (light fare and beverages)

We would be grateful for your presence as we honour the legacy of Justice Hughes and his profound impact on Canada’s legal and civic community.
