Samhain is one of the the traditional pagan sabbats, taking place on the 31s of October. Originally celebrated as the Celtic new year, and also the Roman festival of Feralia, it is one of the four fire sabbats in the pagan traditions, celebrated with large community bonfires. It was these traditions that eventually became Halloween.
In the pagan traditions it is considered a liminal time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead are blurred, and a time to celebrate the spirits of the dead.
