Ukrainian jazz?! Meet StarDust Jazz Trio, who have created an exciting new niche in world music fusion. Along with a full complement of jazz standards, Broadway hits, and holiday favourites, they have also completely reworked well-known traditional Ukrainian pop and folk classics into their own unique jazz-infused arrangements, with echoes of everything from samba to swing, bossa nova to blues.
StarDust Jazz Trio is fronted by singer Zhanna Zinchenko. Accompanying on piano with a broad palette of colours and textures is Victor Kowalenko. Holding down the bottom is Stephan Lang (Koshyts) on string bass. With everything from danceable Latin beats to funky blues to sultry torch songs, in any language, StarDust Jazz Trio’s unmistakable sound and dynamic performances transcend all cultural barriers, winning them loyal enthusiastic fans worldwide.
Zhanna Zinchenko – vocals. Zhanna’s electrifying stage presence and spectacular voice are the first thing you notice about StarDust Jazz Trio. Zhanna hails from Zaporizhia, in the heart of Ukraine. An incredibly versatile singer, she is equally comfortable performing the classical repertoire, church music, traditional Ukrainian folk songs, and her true love, jazz. When she’s not behind the microphone herself, she conducts numerous Toronto area choirs and coaches vocal technique.
Victor Kowalenko – piano. Born and raised in Toronto, Victor has been playing jazz piano (and occasionally trombone) for most of his life. After retiring from a long career as a high school music teacher and band director, he now devotes himself full-time to church choir conducting and StarDust Jazz Trio, for whom he writes out most of the arrangements.
Stephan Lang (Koshyts) – string bass. A classically trained multi-instrumentalist, Stephan spent his reckless youth pursuing a career as a rock star in Los Angeles, before settling down and becoming a world-class international interpreter. With that phase of his life behind him, he has now returned to his original passion, music, although in his energetic stage performances he sometimes forgets he isn’t playing rock and roll any more.
