Mirror Mirror on the Wall is a series of collages and interactive mirrors that act as mind maps of refusal. To refuse is to reject something outright, saying “fuck that!” It’s an unambiguous rejection, based on the certainty that a perceived abuse, to oneself or to others, can no longer be tolerated.Five large-scale pieces each arrange hundreds of expressions of refusal: refusal of fascist violence, of gender- and sexuality-based oppression, of capitalist inequalities, of nationalistic exclusion and of genocide.

The exhibit forms a neural pathway that considers neuroplasticity as a process for change. Throughout one's lifetime, the brain has the ability to form new neural networks while rendering unused synapses obsolete. The artist asks: Can new tolerant neural networks form and strengthen by defending a tolerant society? And can they block and replace decrepit, intolerant synaptic systems through collective resistance and refusal, rendering them obsolete?Mirror Mirror on the Wall imposes introspection on the viewer, forcing them to ask: What do I choose to tolerate and what do I actively refuse... and what will it take me to change my mind? These mind maps compel self-reflection on questions that require answers in a world where intolerance of difference is on the rise

Meet the artist-

David "widge" Widgington (he/him/they) is a queer undisciplinary artivist and settler, based in Tiohtiá:ke (Montréal) on traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka (Mohawk). Widge practices a sort of living archeology of dissent by collecting activist artefacts before they get buried under the weight of time. He retells recent history by thematically arranging imagery created by social movements. Collage (digital + analog) is a recurring technique. Widge maintains that by collecting, assembling and redistributing his works back to the protest movements that created the source imagery, his works provide an opportunity for self-reflection and a sense of belonging within a vast cultural heritage of opposition to injustice.
