Mustang Island, the third album from Austin-based band Little Mazarn, is a gentle force. Waves of grief crest like surf on the Texas coast. Wild horses break through long-shuttered gates, only to come back around. Lead songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Verrill (she/her) joins bandmates Jeff Johnston (he/him) and Carolina Chauffe (they/them). The core members cast out seventeen years apart in both directions, placing the project at the cusp of multiple generations.

The balance of acoustic instruments and electric effects on Mustang Island also thrives firmly in the in-between. The ten-song collection continues work with Dear Life Records (MJ Lenderman, Fust). A full-throated romp through the capabilities of community-minded songcraft, Mustang Island is both naturalistic and futuristic, completely recasting Little Mazarn’s origins in primitive folk. Instead, the band reaches towards sonic experimentation and spacious expansion.

Lindsey’s heart-opening vocals and Jeff’s singing saw, both trademarks of the project, mix with unexpected bombastic drums, dissonant synthesizers, and a chorus of orchestral oddities. Shaking off any genre and geographic boundaries, Mustang Island manages to swirl its creators’ love for The Beach Boys’ melodic rock, wise Southern singer-songwriters, and never-too-much ambient minimalism. This mid-career ode dances confidently in the creative liberties granted by decades in the game – more dazzlingly lively, and honestly somber, than ever before.

Our earliest exposures to music can often be the most formative. For Toronto-based songwriter Eliza Niemi, that influence came from her Dad who taught her the basics of guitar and bass at home. These childhood experiences of playing music together by ear fostered the sense of playfulness that she’s approached her craft with ever since.

She later studied classical cello and piano, and has been touring for the better part of the last decade. Her debut LP “Staying Mellow Blows” was released on her own label, Vain Mina Records, and long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. Her follow-up LP, Progress Bakery, is releasing March 21st on Tin Angel and Vain Mina and has already garnered praise from Exclaim, FLOOD and more.

poolblood (she/they), the musical nom-de-plume of Toronto’s Maryam Said, released their debut album 'mole', January 2023 (Next Door Records). Maryam grew up with mo-town, Somali, electronic, rock, R&B and classical music. These all influenced poolblood’s multi-genre music passion. poolblood has collaborated with Shamir, Jorge Elbrect, Christian Lee Hutson, Jasamine White-Gluz (No Joy) and many more on their debut album.

'mole' has been critically acclaimed with features on NPR, Bandcamp (album of the day!), Exclaim, MTV and many more. 'mole' was also nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. poolblood has been touring Canada & USA including SXSW, Pop Montreal, River & Sky Festival and a USA tour with Speedy Ortiz.

poolblood’s new follow up EP 'theres_plenty_of_music_to_go_around.zip' is an add on to the storyline that 'mole' started, sort of like an encore, Maryam says “I felt like was calling ‘once more, with feeling.’” Featuring guest musicians Drew Harmon, Palehound and Ellis (San Fermin).
Latest single “wringer” is a twangy number which just gets bigger and bigger as it progresses.
