On Saturday, September 27th (6–9:30PM) we gather in community for a Hip Hop Healing Open Mic, full of music, poetry, and culture. This event is significant; it marks 12 years since our founder Jermaine Henry produced and hosted his first benefit concert, iBelieve Music Helps: Youth in Transition.
Back in 2013, a young and ambitious Jermaine believed in the power of music to help youth navigate the difficult transition into adulthood. He has a vision for cominging the arts, mental health, and community engagement. His best friend and business partner at the time was struggling and diagnosed with mental illness. This inspired the benefit concert. Also, that concert was the first time he connected with the late great JV (Jordon Veira), that would spark a partnership with him and the collective Spoke N’ Heard; uplifting voices, running educational programs, events, and reminding the community the power of arts, culture and legacy.
12 years later, the mission continues. What started with iBelieve Music Helps & Spoke N' Heard has evolved into Hip Hop Healing, a practice, a movement, and a community that celebrates the power of Hip Hop as a tool for wellness, self-expression, and collective healing.
Join us as we:
-Share poetry, rhymes, and song in a BRAVE(R) space
-Celebrate the legacy of iBelieve Music Helps , Spoke N' Heard and the life of JV
-Connect with community through art, love, and healing energy
This open mic is a marker; a celebration of how far we’ve come and transitioning into where we’re going.
