Wildlife Wednesday at Treehaven: Kestrels

Discover wildlife that calls Wisconsin's Northwoods home through Wildlife Wednesdays at Treehaven! Join us monthly for this FREE all-ages program series, and explore the natural history of each month's focus animal through interactive activities, guided walks, and/or specimen observation. From fur to feathers, woods to water, predator to prey, and more, experience the diversity of the animal world right outside our windows—and learn how you can help protect it!

Behold the American Kestrel, North America's smallest falcon! This robin-sized raptor is a common sight in and around grasslands, where it hunts prey including insects, rodents, snakes, and small birds. Most people have likely seen one perched on powerlines, whether they recognized it or not! However, there are various factors threatening the continued abundance—and survival—of kestrels, and data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey show that populations have dropped by over 50% since the 1970s. Take a short hike to grassland habitat at Treehaven, and keep an eye out for kestrels as you discover the reasons behind their decline. You'll learn about kestrel conservation efforts in Wisconsin and how to support them, as well as ways you can help on your own!

Bring your own binoculars, or rent a pair of ours for $1 (cash only; please bring exact change).

Meet in the main parking lot. Dress for the weather, bring bug/tick repellent, and wear good walking shoes. Hike will be less than a mile and slow-paced, but may involve brief uphill travel. All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
