The Golden Gun has finally arrived! A collaboration has long mooted between these two fine establishments. The Gun in Hackney in its prior wonky music iteration, sadly trades no more, but its spirit lives on in the form of ethos, attitude and most importantly, musical events in fun places. This one has been in the pipeline for a while and finally lands at The Golden Lion in Todmorden on 29th & 30th August.
Friday:
The Golden Gun starts on Friday with dear friend to both venues Vladimir Ivkovic, whose cult following at The Gun was unrivalled by any other travelling guest. Vlad’s ability to weave & repurpose music from across all spectrums perfectly encapsulates The Gun’s outlook, make it weird, keep you guessing and if possible, make it bring the house (pub) down. Be it rare eighties, slomo post punk or trance - under Vlad’s umbrella of care, it all makes thrilling sense.
Joining him for her Golden Lion debut is none other than Lena Willikens - luminary of Vlad’s from Salon des Amatuers and tasteful clubs across Europe - and veteran of one sole, seismic bank holiday set in Hackney that is still being talked about (certainly by us at The Gun).
The third and final piece of the Friday jigsaw is Conor Thomas - more local to this region and good friend of The Gun, one of Vladimir’s favorites, caretaker of The Death of Rave and Reel Torque, resident DJ at P3 Annihilation Eve and The White Hotel, and 21 years at boomkat.com.
Will be a warm up set and light show by Resonance Calder
Saturday:
On Saturday The Gun presents, a mixture of Gun heroes and residents assembled from earlier in the day:
Nick Stephens, The Gun Landlord extraordinaire, keeper of the Vortex in the Heart of Hackney, Jürgen Klopp of The Fucking Great Time, an alchemist who turned four walls on Well Street into a sanctuary of chaos, connection and catharsis, who transformed pints and sound waves into lifelong bonds. And what a brilliant DJ he is…
Psych Milligan will bring some hazy rock and strange acid and post punk growlers to the outside areas, showcasing The Gun’s penchant for music from all corners. Friends & stalwarts of every era at The Gun, whether its Black Acid or Leonard Cohen, the weird yet wonderful policy remains..
Later on into the evening Nathan Gregory Wilkins will open up downstairs. Nathan was the DJ on the very first night The Gun opened and his open mind and his nose for sleazy electronic excellence has made us synonymous with our sound & vice versa ever since. A veteran in all but appearance, it couldn’t be a Gun night without him.
Closing the evening will be the Decius Soundsystem. The lads have smashed not only The Gun to pieces in recent years, but our Glastonbury stage on two occasions too, so it only seems fitting that they bring that cherished policy to The Lion with us. Expect to dance. A lot.
The Golden Lion. The Host. The Unique. It will premiere first Golden Lion Sounds short film "Satellite Souls". "Satellite Souls" is a poetic short documentary exploring the orbit of Andrew Weatherall — a legendary artist, DJ, producer, thinker, and friend. Told through intimate reflections of those whose lives he touched, the film is less a biography and more a constellation of memory, spirit, and sound. This is not a story of fame. It’s a story of presence, friendship, and the quiet revolutions that begin on the dancefloor and echo for a lifetime.
Screening will be followed by album launch of Various Artists "Sounds From The Flightpath Estate Volume Two" with DJ sets in Wooden Room
Saturday matinee with Vladimir Ivkovic at Ginger Tiger / Fat Fingers Vinyl next door.
