About the event

The Geology of the Isle of Mull, Iona and Staffa weekend group tour

Have you ever wondered what the island of Mull is made up of? Well am gonna tell you…

This trip will include visiting the following places:

DAY 1 (Friday 11th July 2025)

Pick up from Glasgow city centre in the afternoon (time tbc) and transport to Oban where we will get the ferry (2hrs30m)

Ferry time - Tbc - (ticket will be included in price if youve selected the option to travel from Glasgow/oban

First night we will be in Craignure so please book accommodation in this area (there is a campsite not to far from the ferry terminal if you don’t mind camping. If you prefer staying in a hotel then I would recommend the Isle of Mull hotel and spa)

DAY 2 (Saturday 12th July 2025)

If you chose the meet us in mull ticket then you’ll meet us on this morning.

The Ross of Mull granitic intrusion including some cool looking xenoliths that formed during the Caledonian orogeny - 420 million years old

Ardlanish Bay - The folded metamorphic rocks of the Moine supergroup including garnet amphibolite and schist that formed during the collision of two plates 450 million years ago that date back to an original deposition age of 1 billion years ago

The volcanic centre of Mull - the opening of the Atlantic Ocean 61 million years ago

The basaltic lavas that spewed out during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean

The fossilised tree that was swallowed by lava back in the day

Visit to Tobermory

We will stay near Fionnphort So please book accommodation here. If you don’t mind camping - Fidden Farm is a good location for staying in.



DAY 3 (Sunday 13th July 2025)

Fingals cave, isle of Staffa - the basaltic colours that formed during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean we may even have the opportunity to look at some puffins

The oldest rocks in Scotland on the Isle of Iona that date back to an astonishing 3 billion years old

Travel to ferry terminal for ferry home

Travel home (2hrs30m) and drop off at Glasgow city centre - we should arrive back in Glasgow around 19:30

Price per person:

Pick up from Glasgow is £330.00

Pick up from Oban is £275.00

2 day ticket for Saturday and Sunday meeting us on Mull is £220.00 on Saturday morning.

Please note that price does not include accommodation or lunch/dinner. There will be an option to join Scottish geologist for dinner in the evenings If staying in the same location as her.
