How to Teach Reading: Starting with the Two Non-negotiables

One child picks up reading fast and the other struggles? Don’t wait, frustration can erode the child’s desire to learn. All children can be good readers by starting with two non-negotiables. Learning the sounds (phonemes) and relating them to a letter (alphabetic principle) is the key to reading. Learning the alphabet comes later. Using objects and pictures to identify the beginning sounds along with the corresponding letter is a great hands-on way to establish these two non-negotiables. The Montessori classroom has many other materials like the sandpaper letters and the moveable alphabet, to further the child’s reading and writing journey.
