CONSORTIUM AURORA BOREALIS CONCERT SAT. SEPT. 27 2025

Join us for the second concert of our 2025-2026 Consortium Aurora Borealis 47th Season, to be held on Saturday, September 27, 7:30 PM, at our beautiful home, St. Paul’s United Church, with its fabulous acoustics and its warm, welcoming ambiance.

We are delighted to welcome Peter Shackleton, who has been the Principal Clarinettist of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra since 1988. He appears as our guest soloist in an exquisite concert of Classic and Romantic chamber music, which we know you’ll enjoy. He is joined by our four core string players, violinists Katie Stevens and James Moat (replacing William Sirois), violist Patrick Horn, and cellist Peter Cosbey. They’ll perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s and Carl Maria von Weber’s celebrated quintets for clarinet and strings, beloved staples of that instrument’s repertoire.

Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A major K. 581 was composed in 1789, the same year as the French Revolution. It is marvellously melodic, mellow, and at times mirthful. Weber’s Grand Quintet in B-flat major Opus 34 for clarinet and string quartet is brilliantly concerto-like, a solo with string accompaniment. It was completed in 1815, the year Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo.

Both quintets were written for specific virtuoso clarinettists, Anton Stadler and Heinrich Baermann respectively, who were good friends of the composer. Mozart’s elegant String Quartet in D minor, K. 421 leads off our concert, and is one of only two out of his twenty-three quartets which he composed in a minor key.

As usual, there will be a ballot draw at intermission, and this time the prize is an artistic one, a gift certificate for two tickets to any Magnus Theatre production within their 2025-2026 season!

This concert is generously sponsored by Saverio Veltri: TD Wealth.
