Angelina is suing Edwin for breach of promise of marriage (almost as serious as a divorce in Victorian England). We join them in court before the Learned Judge, with Counsel for the Plaintiff pleading her case. It seems that Edwin is already engaged to someone else as well, and has decided to plead his own defense. We find the judge has a penchant for using some unusual tactics to decide a case!
The Zoo
Aesculapius Carboy, a chemist (pharmacist) in love with Laetitia (the retired grocer’s daughter) are meeting in secret at the British Zoo; unbeknownst to them, her father (Mr. Grinder) is hot on their trail. At the zoo we also meet Eliza Smith, a highly principled young lady in charge of the snack bar; Thomas Brown (a noble in disguise searching for virtue) is finishing off some of Eliza’s delicious snacks. The public are out to see the beasts, but all comes to a halt when an unexpected event occurs.
