International leaders, extensive security measures, closed roads, and significant public and political attention. What does NATO actually mean for The Hague? Is it merely a global organization focused on security and cooperation, or is there more to it? As world leaders gather in the capital on June 24 and 25 for the NATO summit, 22 artists from The Hague will showcase how they interpret this vast, abstract theme. In the group exhibition organized by the Hague Art Circle, political poetry, power art, and security become tangible subjects for viewing, feeling, and discussion. At the Hague Art Circle, we seize this opportunity for an exhibition. From June 4 to 29, 22 visual artists will present their perspectives on the theme of 'NATO'.
In the exhibition curated by Rob Chevallier, artists each express their understanding of the concept of 'NATO' in their unique ways. Some approach it with sharp criticism, while others express wonder or share personal narratives. How do we encapsulate themes such as international protection or political influence in a painting, photograph, or installation? The outcome is a vibrant palette of ideas, where NATO is not only a military alliance but also a source of questions, concerns, and inspiration.
From Martin Sjardijn to Sona Sahakian, and from poetic imagery to confrontational statements: this exhibition invites viewers to reconsider not only art but also The Hague's role on the global stage.
However, it also pertains to political influence, substantial funding, and how The Hague adapts to such global events. How do you translate all of this into visual art? What forms do artists find for these abstract and loaded concepts? In this group exhibition, you will encounter a variety of responses – critical, poetic, exploratory, or personal.
So, what exactly is NATO? According to the organization, it revolves around international defense, cooperation, protection, and security.
