Collegium Singers’ summer concert offers a rich tapestry of
secular choral music, depicting nature, times and seasons.
Opening with three popular English Madrigals of the sixteenth century,
we end our first half with a set of six pieces OfBeasts by 20th century composer
David Cox, who worked for the BBC World Service. He skilfully depicts characteristics
of Horse, Crow, Seal, Crocodile, Flea and Unicorn, set to beautiful texts
from a medieval anthology.
Andrew Kirk plays two organ solos in the programme, Song of Sunshine by Alfred Hollins,
and Fantasia on Sumer is icumen in by Somerset born composer Ghislaine Reece-Trapp.
After the interval, Victorian part songs by Sullivan and Elgar will be followed by five
Songs of Nature by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, sung in English translation.
The concert concludes with a set of contemporary settings, including Stars by Erik
Esenvalds featuring tuned wine glasses, the metronomic allure of Canadian composer
Jennifer Lucy Cook’s Time, Kate Rusby’s Underneath the Stars and ending
with Cole Porter’s Night and Day.
We look forward to welcoming you to our concert
