Middleton Hall is a Grade II listed building dating back to medieval times
It is set in 42 acres of the peaceful North Warwickshire countryside. It has a long history spanning over a millennium. The first written record of Middleton is in the Domesday Book of 1086, and elements of the hall date back to the 13th Century.
The Freville family held the Manor of Middleton until 1418, when it was transferred to the Willoughbys by marrying the heiress Margaret de Freville to Sir Hugh Willoughby. The Willoughbys already had extensive estates in Nottinghamshire and elsewhere, their principal seat being Wollaton Hall, Nottingham.
The first written record of the Grey Lady was made during the tenancy of John Peel, Liberal MP for Tamworth and cousin of police founder Sir Robert. John Peel’s wife first witnessed The Grey Lady in the 1800s.
Mrs Peel is reported to have walked through the library, which is now the bar area, and seen a woman she did not recognize sitting in a chair,” says Amy.
“Furious and without speaking to the woman, she approached the butler to ask why he had not bothered to inform her she had a guest. He replied that he had not admitted anyone into the house. Confused, both presumed this woman must have been a ghost. Who is this grey lady?
Since then, the ghostly figure has been seen silently treading the halls and corridors of Middleton Hall and regularly seen by staff and visitors alike. Who have also experienced cold spots, disembodied voices, and doors slamming in rooms when no one was there.
