OASIS Lunchtime Talk: Analogue Game Jamming as an HE Teaching Tool

Group analogue game jamming (short intensive making) offers some unique benefits to students: it delivers excitement and engagement, breaks the ice and foster teamwork, and exposes students to rapid cycles of iterative improvement (a compelling analogue of commercial creative practice). In this talk Joe Macleod-Iredale lays out the context for his research on game jamming, details six game jam examples, what data was gathered, how it was analysed, and shares key insights into the benefits delivered.

After running a retail interior and furniture design consultancy, Joe Macleod-Iredale slid into academia (because the people are nicer). He teaches on the Art and Design Foundation Degree at the University of Salford as well as on the Product Design BA at Manchester Metropolitan University. He will submit his PhD later this year, which investigates the benefits of analogue game design as a teaching tool in higher education. He is also an analogue game designer and will launch his first game on Kickstarter shortly after submitting.
