FILM SYNOPSIS:
The tale of Sweeney Todd, the serial-killer London barber and his cannibalistic pie-baking partner in crime Mrs. Lovett, first appears in a series of penny dreadfuls from the mid-nineteenth century. Remarkably, the mechanics of the murders have traveled to the present pretty much untouched – trick chair, trap door, straight razor, meat pies, the lot. A 1970 retelling introduced Todd’s motivation; Stephen Sondheim’s 1979 musical gave it songs and won basically every possible Tony; and the 2007 Tim Burton movie we’re presenting here locked in its glamorously filthy Goth-y aesthetic and introduced the murderer to a whole new generation of victims.
Burton’s macabre sensibility really lets Sweeney Todd loose here, too. With Sondheim’s dark and dazzling songwork and performances from Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman, the incomparable Helena Bonham Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen doing the closest he can get to “understated,” this Sweeney Todd gets your blood flowing before it gets a whole bunch of other blood flowing, all over the place. And so in order to offer you, our beloved audience, all the freedom you need to express your exuberance, we’re changing things up. Tampa Theatre is not going to enforce our normal rules on sitting down and being quiet during these screenings. Instead, we’re having a party!
