Ostensibly it’s a crime thriller about a handsome (well, distinctive-looking) young(ish) criminal who’s on the lam and acting on raw impulse when he runs into Patricia, an American student who’s selling papers on the street. They two find themselves drawn to each other, unable to resist the fascination of what each represents to the other despite the danger this puts them both in. But that’s like saying Reservoir Dogs is a procedural about a bunch of nerds screwing up a robbery — what makes Breathless special is its monumental sense of style, the impossibly raw and organic feeling of its shots, and the way its anti-authoritarian method of creation (Godard filmed mostly chronologically, in some cases hiding a camera operator in a postal cart or seating him in a wheelchair instead of using a camera dolly) informs the vibe of the final product.
