About the event

Jefferson and the University
Thomas Jefferson saw education as essential to a free society, and his founding of the University of Virginia embodied his vision for the role of universities in a democracy. Historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy will explore Jefferson’s ideas about higher education, including its purpose in cultivating civic virtue, advancing knowledge, and sustaining liberty. The talk also will address how Jefferson’s vision influenced American universities, both their achievements and their contradictions.
