Just in time for the Monarch Festival, join us for October's Second Sunday Talk on October 12 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. We're hosting Dean and Sally Jue as they share their extensive knowledge about the refuge's butterflies.
Dean and Sally Jue have shared a mutual passion for the natural world since they met over 50 years ago at the University of Michigan. After moving to Tallahassee in 1987, they continued to pursue their outdoor interests, becoming members of the Florida Native Plant Society and the local Apalachee Audubon Society.
In 2002, they discovered a love for butterflies and became founding members and officers of the local Hairstreak Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association. Dean worked at FSU’s Florida Resources and Environmental Analysis Center, and Sally was at the Florida Natural Areas Inventory until they retired in 2016. Since then, they have continued to share their interests in birds, plants, and butterflies, both locally and globally.
In 2023, Dean and Sally co-authored the book Finding Butterflies in Florida’s Big Bend Region with David Harder. In their book, a chapter is devoted to each of the three management units at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, offering guidance on the best times and routes for seeing butterflies. Their talk will discuss the many unique butterflies found within the refuge and offer ways for both individuals and land managers to help conserve these iconic species.
