What: Small-scale food staples workshop
Date: Saturday October 18th, 10am-12
Location: 782 Foss Rd., Talent, OR (*park along Foss Rd. only)

This is the 2nd part of a series on growing local food staples from locally adapted seeds.

Part two will cover post-harvest processing methods using low-tech, manual practices and small-scale equipment to support threshing and cleaning the harvest. Workshop will include hands-on practical skills to prepare your harvest for fall or spring planting and/or long-term storage and use in the kitchen.

Types of crops we will work with and discuss will include oats, emmer, einkorn, spelt, flax, lentils, camelina, peanuts, oil sunflowers, heritage wheat, quinoa, millet, upland rice, barley, rye, amaranth, buckwheat, dry corn, chickpeas, dry beans, sorghum and more.

We will also discuss poly-cultures and no-till methods, including the use of occultation and other mulches for W**d mitigation for early spring planting.

It is time to begin prepping ground for fall/winter planted varieties that will grow well only with the moisture received from winter snows and spring rains. The fall planting window (late October/November) has been the most successful planting window for Rogue Valley growers, as these crops mature into their final ripening stage and harvest just as the intense summer heat begins to set in. Local growers have successfully planted heritage crops on all scales, from 100 ft2 and up to 50 acres. Any size area that is planted moves us all closer to local self-reliance for the region.
