Belly dancing, also known as Raqs Sharqi in Arabic, boasts a rich and complex history rooted in ancient fertility rituals and social dances of the Middle East and North Africa. While its exact origins are debated, evidence suggests that various forms of belly dance existed in different cultures across the region for centuries, often performed by women for women in intimate settings. Over time, these diverse traditions gradually evolved and were influenced by factors such as cultural exchange, religious beliefs, and social customs. Katie Kirkpatrick will lead a discussion and demonstration of these dances while providing their meanings to the specific cultures they are derived from.
Katie Kirkpatrick hails from California, and has been a professional dancer in the DMV area for over 15 years. She has performed bellydance and samba around the world, including in Egypt, Turkey, Brazil, and France. Formerly of the US State Department, she is currently President of DC's only samba school, Vava United School of Samba. She is also a historical tour guide professional who runs her company Off the Mall Tours full-time, while continuing to perform and teach dance on the side.
