Whangaparāoa College Wetland Working Bee
Whangaparāoa College has been working with students, staff and RHB to undertake restoration on their school grounds. We've made some great headway, the students are enthusiastic and learning lots about caring for their taiao. This winter the community has planted about 5000 native plants here!
It is open to all. The working bees are usually on the first Sunday of every month, 9-11am but we have a special one coming up on a Wednesday (24th September).
Did you know that Whangaparāoa College have a wetland on their school grounds? What’s good about a wetland? It filters stormwater run-off before it reaches the sea. It acts as a reservoir for stormwater to reduce flooding risk to nearby properties. It provides habitat for threatened native species of birds, lizards and insects.
RHB, college students, teachers, their families and the local community are coming together to restore the wetland to a fully functioning ecosystem.
What is involved? Come along and help remove invasive weeds like moth plant, woolly nightshade, banana passionfruit and more – this allows the native species to flourish in their place. All tools and training provided. You just need to bring gardening gloves, and drinking water. Wear sturdy boots/shoes and dress for the weather.
Come to the back entrance at Berdinner Road - park by the courts, and walk straight along the path beside the courts to the meeting point.
Snacks provided
