This 1-day course offers hands-on instruction in natural dyeing cotton fabric. Students will learn essential techniques including scouring, mordanting, and dyeing with plants. The course covers the full process from fabric preparation to creating vibrant colors. Each participant will take home a hand-dyed bandana.
Learning objectives:
Gain hands-on experience dyeing cotton fabrics with plant-based color.
Learn techniques to create vibrant, long-lasting results on natural fibers.
Build the skills and confidence to repeat the natural dyeing process at home.
All materials will be provided. Please wear clothing that can get messy.
This class is instructed by Kirsten Miller (she/her), a fiber artist and naturalist based in Tacoma, Washington. She earned a Master’s in Environmental Studies from The Evergreen State College and works as an Aquatic Land Manager with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources in the Aquatics Program. Alongside her professional work, she teaches fiber arts—including natural dyeing and appliqué classes. She is also the lead organizer for the Tacoma and Olympia Craft Clubs and a co-founder of the Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts in Olympia.
