Dive deep into the dope designs, distinct discography, and documents of hip-hop culture as Dr. Emad Rahim presents "30 Years of Hip-Hop: Diggin in the Crates – A Collector’s Cipher," an exhibition chronicling the beats, bars, and bold style that built a global movement.
Rahim, educator, entrepreneur, and former hip-hop journalist for Syracuse New Times (also known back in the day as DJ Plain Truth) curates this collection from his personal vault. The exhibition features original vinyl records, autographed memorabilia, and promotional items from legendary MCs, album-inspired artwork, limited-edition sneakers, designer toys, and rare comic books with covers that pay tribute to hip-hop icons. It also includes photographs and flyers that shed light on Syracuse’s often-overlooked but vibrant contributions to hip-hop history. Whether you were raised on Boom Bap, swayed by G-Funk, or repping the new school, there’s something in this exhibit that’ll hit home.
The show will also feature a dynamic lineup of programming, including panel discussions with DJs, artists, and scholars exploring hip-hop’s legacy and local impact. Vinyl listening sessions will spotlight classic tracks and underground gems, offering an immersive experience for music lovers.
“Hip-hop raised me,” says Rahim. “This collection isn’t just about nostalgia, it’s about preservation. It’s about honoring the art form that gave voice to the voiceless, turned block parties into revolutions, and made the world listen.”
