About the event

Pride Month Movie Night- Ammonite (15+)
Welcome to our second LGBTQIA+ film night supported by Create studios, BFI Film Audience Network (FAN) and supported by funds from the National Lottery.

We are thrilled to announce that local speaker Sarah Cosgriff will be joining us for our film night! After the screening, Sarah will discuss the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation in science and address some of the ongoing issues in the field as well as a short Q&A.

About Sarah

Sarah Cosgriff is a science communicator and asexual activist. As part of their work they raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ people, particularly scientists. They have done this through creating resources for teachers, presenting talks and science shows, and facilitating visits from LGBTQ+ scientists at Out of the Can, a LGBTQ+ youth group. Sarah was shortlisted for the Positive Role Model - LGBT category of the National Diversity Awards in 2022.
Movie details 🍿

Set in 1840s Lyme Regis, England, Ammonite is a tender and intimate drama inspired by the life of Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter. Living a solitary existence on the rugged coast, Mary is overlooked by the scientific establishment despite her extraordinary contributions. Her quiet life changes when Charlotte Murchison, a young woman recovering from illness, is sent to stay with her by the sea.

As the two women spend time together, a profound connection forms, blossoming into a passionate romance. In a world constrained by societal norms and expectations, their love provides solace and liberation, challenging the boundaries of both class and convention. Against breathtaking coastal landscapes and the meticulous work of fossil discovery, Ammonite delicately portrays their queer relationship as a testament to resilience, intimacy, and unspoken struggles.
