In 2024, Shōgun (2024) made history when it became the first ever non-English language show to win best drama at the Emmy Awards. The series is based on the 1975 novel written by Australian-born author, James Clavell, and tells the story of an English navigator who has a fateful encounter with an upcoming shogun when his ship washes ashore on the coast of Japan during the Warring-States Era. Although the story is fictional, some of the characters are based on real historical figures and actual historical events are referenced. In this talk series, our guest speakers will uncover the untold stories behind this popular drama and take a closer look at the set design, costumes and swordsmanship.

On Day 1, Dr Yasuhisa Watanabe will walk through the history of Japanese swords (katana), and introduce iaidō – a Japanese martial art focused on drawing, cutting, and re-sheathing a sword, which originated around the Warring-States Era. There will be a breathtaking performance of iaidō at the end of the talk.

On Day 2, Dr Mark Erdmann will discuss architectural and interior settings in the Shōgun series, and reveal the unique origins of the story. It will be an enlightening talk for fans of Japanese castles, history and architecture of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

On Day 3, Assoc Prof Toby Slade will compare the incredible costumes used in the Shōgun series with historical clothing and armour, then explore how costume design negotiates the complex intersection of authenticity, dramatic effect and cultural translation.

This talk series will equip you with deep insights into the Shōgun series, and make you want to rewatch the entire show again!
