In an evocative retelling of a timeless epic.
Be present to be enthralled by Sundara Kandam. The fifth chapter of the Ramayana, Sundara Kandam, truly lives up to its name—Sundaram means beautiful, not just in form but in divine essence. It exemplifies Satyam (Truth), Shivam (Auspiciousness), and Sundaram (Beauty).
This chapter marks a dramatic turning point. Rama, overwhelmed by the loss of Sita, finds hope through Hanuman’s unwavering devotion and courage. Hanuman's journey to Lanka, his encounter with Sita, and his fiery warning to Ravana restore colour and purpose to the lives of Rama and Sita.
A celebrated verse captures its spirit:
Sundarē Sundarō Rāmaḥ
Sundarī kathā Sītā
Sundaram vanaṁ, kavyam, mantram – kim na sundaram?
In this production by Sri Mudhraalaya, Sundara Kandam is retold through the classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. Black-and-white costuming sets the tone, with colour returning upon Hanuman’s entrance, symbolizing transformation. The story unfolds in three acts: Hanuman’s journey, his meeting with Sita, and his fiery confrontation with Ravana, concluding on an auspicious note.
