Session 1
Client Planning After the Public Guardian & Trustee
John Burns, CFP R.F.P. Senior Financial Planner,
former Chief Investment Officer of Public Guardian & Trustee of Ontario
Over the past 40 years, John has been a pioneer in Canadian financial planning, developing practice standards and early visionary concepts to advance professionalism in this field.
In his role with the Attorney General’s Public Guardian & Trustee’s department, he worked to ensure the Public Guardian delivered basic essential financial services to the largest number of people previously unable to manage their personal money at the least cost.
There is a significant role for us to assist clients on how to stay out of the Public Guardian situation, plus to work with clients who are released from the Public Guardian & Trustee’s government department to be successful with their financial independence.
John foresees a need to connect those with a CFDS (Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist) background with clients and will enlighten members on how we can work with clients when the Public Trustees’ work ends with separating and divorcing clients.
Session 2
Family Related Financial Disputes – Estates and beyond
Julie Gill, Q.Med, AccFM, AccIM, FDRP-Fin, Cert.EM, Adv MHFA, Cert. QFAS
After 20 years in the regular financial industry, Julie found her calling to become a mediator, arbitrator and coach focussed on working with families during challenges. Her focus was primarily with those going through separation and divorce and then her practice expanded to families having disputes over estates.
The purpose of this session is to develop your ability to coach clients through putting their affairs into order for estate planning in a timely manner while their new financial situation is fresh in their minds. Avoid unnecessary rework for yourself and the client by doing this before they forget.
Julie will give us a glimpse of how important it is to develop your skills beyond the financial separation settlement for preparing clients’ and their families to properly deal with their legacy.
It may be a new extension of the services you offer that has not been on your radar. You can help clients learn alternative ways of arranging their affairs by incorporating their personal wishes and family dynamics. This saves their children from experiencing a family feud (incurring the negative psychological impacts) and reduces higher future legal fees.
Session 3
Observations about Enhanced CPP with Special Considerations for Separating Couples
Jason Yee, CFA, P Eng
Jason is recognized as an expert about the Canada Pension Plan and has dedicated his career to dealing with solutions for numerous calculation problems connected to CPP.
CPP is not transparent as to how they conduct their calculations, and recent changes with the enhanced payments to the Canada Pension Plan make it even more difficult to know what the timing and benefits will be for our clients.
Mr. Yee’s tools help financial planners to fill the gap of being able to fully analyze CPP to provide a more in-depth understanding of retirement income.
Typically, financial planners request a client’s CPP statement for calculating future incomes, and the recent enhanced payment changes are not widely understood as to the impact on CPP.
We have all heard the so called ‘wisdom’ of friends and family who encourage taking CPP at 60 to get ‘the most possible’ – often without any analysis to support this opinion.
Without analysis, opinions can be risky for clients to act upon.
Session 4
