Honoring the Vat
A New Year Ritual at Aya Fiber Studio
Saturday, January 3rd | Aya Fiber Studio 11:00 am
Begin the New Year by honoring the indigo vat as a living system of color, care, and transformation. This intimate gathering marks the first indigo dyeing of the year, a tradition rooted in renewal, protection, and intention.
Participants will be guided through a gentle opening ritual, learn how to read and awaken the vat, and take part in a slow, mindful dyeing experience. Each attendee will dye a small piece—kimono-shaped washi paper or cloth—as a symbolic offering and personal talisman for the year ahead.
This event is not a class focused on production, but a shared moment of gratitude and reflection—acknowledging the plants, microbes, time, and hands that make indigo possible. I first did this with Makiko-san at our Blue in the Mountains Retreat and thought it a very nice way to start our new sukumo vat. What a great way to start the New Year!
The First Dyeing is called Hatsuzome: this is A Ritual Beginning
In Japan, the first act of the year—whether writing (kakizome), drawing water (hatsumizu), or dyeing (hatsuzome)—is believed to:
* Set the spiritual tone for the entire year
* Invite good fortune, safety, and success
* Carry heightened symbolic power because it marks a threshold moment
* Dyeing at this time is not just making color—it is opening the year.
