Based on a Graham Greene short story which he helped adapt, this is a sensitive study of the way in which the small son of a foreign ambassador in London interprets the strange and seemingly illogical behavior of the adults who surround him. He becomes aware of an illicit love affair between Baines, the butler, whom he hero-worships and one of the typists at the embassy. But when he sees Baines' wife fall to her death while spying on the couple, his interpretation of the cause of her death places Baines in a perilous situation. Convinced his idol is guilty of murder, he tries to help him…

Βασισμένη σε διήγημα του Graham Greene, το οποίο ο ίδιος βοήθησε να διασκευαστεί, η ταινία αποτελεί μια ευαίσθητη μελέτη για τον τρόπο που το μικρό παιδί ενός ξένου πρέσβη στο Λονδίνο ερμηνεύει την παράξενη και συχνά παράλογη συμπεριφορά των ενηλίκων γύρω του. Το αγόρι ανακαλύπτει έναν παράνομο έρωτα ανάμεσα στον μπάτλερ Baines, τον οποίο θαυμάζει σαν ήρωα, και μία από τις δακτυλογράφους της πρεσβείας. Όταν όμως βλέπει τη σύζυγο του Baines να σκοτώνεται ενώ παρακολουθεί το ζευγάρι, η ερμηνεία του για το τι συνέβη βάζει τον Baines σε μια εξαιρετικά επικίνδυνη θέση. Πιστεύοντας ότι ο ήρωάς του είναι ένοχος για φόνο, προσπαθεί να τον βοηθήσει…
