Join us at Holy Trinity Church, Minchinhampton and step into a world of devotion, intimacy, and luminous Baroque sound in this special concert of choral music by Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Sebastian Bach.
At its heart is Buxtehude’s extraordinary Membra Jesu Nostri — a deeply personal meditation on the suffering body of Christ, unfolding with tenderness, stillness, and moments of radiant beauty. Alongside are two cantatas by Bach: Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir, with its raw plea rising from darkness toward hope, and Christ lag in Todes Banden, a powerful Easter proclamation of life wrested from death.
These works are bound not only by faith and text, but by history. As a young man, Bach famously walked more than 250 miles across Germany to hear Buxtehude play in Lübeck — extending a short leave into a months-long pilgrimage, so great was Buxtehude’s reputation and influence. That journey left a lasting mark on Bach’s musical language, and this programme places their music side by side, in conversation across a generation.
Together, these works reveal the full expressive range of the Baroque sacred imagination: moments of intensity and aching suspension, sparkling amens and ringing hallelujahs bursting forth from textures of extraordinary delicacy, and long, lyrical arias unfolding with poise and tenderness.
We will be accompanied by players from professional baroque orchestra Ensemble La Notte, who specialise in historically informed performance of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century repertoire. As part of our commitment to creating high-quality performance opportunities for keen amateur musicians with a strong interest in Baroque music, several amateur players will be joining the ensemble for this concert, performing alongside experienced professionals in a shared exploration of this remarkable repertoire.
Seasonal treats and wine will be available during the concert, adding a delicious touch to a memorable experience. These can be purchased in advance with your ticket, or on the door.
