On Saturday 2nd May, The Sub Rooms welcomes legendary UK electronic music producer A Guy Called Gerald, for a powerful LIVE show hosted by Normski, alongside special guests including The Jungle Drummer and vocalists David Simpson and Yeukai Makoni, with DJ sets from Colin Dale and Will B.
A Guy Called Gerald operates in a state of permanent evolution. While the history books rightfully cite him as a primary architect of the UK’s electronic DNA - the man behind the Hacienda-defining “Voodoo Ray” and a founding member of 808 State - Gerald has never been one for the retrospective circuit.
He’s a musician who treats the studio as a laboratory and the stage as a testing ground for his ongoing experiments in ‘black secret technology’, collaborating with David Bowie, Cabaret Voltaire, Black Uhuru, Finley Quaye, Lamb, Tricky and The Stone Roses. From the proto-jungle blueprints of albums such as “28 Gun Bad Boy” and “Black Secret Technology” to his later explorations in modular synthesis and avant-garde jazz fusion, Gerald’s career is a masterclass in staying ahead of the curve.
The night will be hosted by Normski, a leading authority on urban and contemporary culture, who has had a prolific career in the field of music, television, photography, fashion and journalism. His new book, ‘The Man with the Golden Shutter’, features iconic photographs of Public Enemy, N.W.A., Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Goldie, Ice-T, Run DMC, and Wu-Tang Clan.
Colin Dale is a foundational DJ in UK dance music history. In 1985 he co-founded the mighty KISS FM in its pirate radio days. He then went on to launch his Abstrakt Dance radio show which was hugely influential, inviting (often for their first UK appearances) artists including the Underground Resistance crew, Stacey Pullen, Laurent Garnier, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, Derrick May, Richie Hawtin, Aphex Twin, Dave Angel, Carl Cox and many more. Abstrakt Dance was first broadcast in 1993 and both Colin and the show became crucial in techno circles worldwide. He continues to DJ and broadcast regularly, staying true to form over four decades, consistently representing the core elements of experimental dance music evolution.
The Jungle Drummer is a force of nature on the club and festival circuit all over the world, with released works on Metalheadz, live performances and DJ shows encompassing a variety of styles and genres. He’s performed with London Elektricity and was an integral part of this groundbreaking show. He has also played with Rodney P and Killa-Kela, breakbeat pioneers Coldcut, Radiohead, NIgel Godrich, Raw Hill Cru, DJ Fresh, Shy FX, A Guy Called Gerald and Faith SFX.
Will B is a London based DJ/Producer and owner of Super Culture Music. He’s been circulating the realms of underground club culture for decades, delivering a kaleidoscope of sounds to the floor, from deep underground house to techno-soul, disco, funk and everything in between. He is the originator of influential London club nights Secretsundaze & Need2Know as well as cult label Latenite Productions. He is also the co-founder of the infamous HeadsNFreaks parties.
