Rebuild Harbor Road, Restore our Pond

Nine months ago, on August 19, 2024, a major storm with catastrophic flooding led to the collapse of Harbor Road, a major thoroughfare in Head of the Harbor, and the emptying of the community's beloved Mill Pond into the Sound. Since then, the Town of Brookhaven and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization have been locked in a stalemate as to who owns the road and is responsible for its repair. As far as we know, there is no resolution in sight. In the meantime, the road continues to disintegrate, the pond is a mud pit, and a major thoroughfare in the community is completely inaccessible.

We are residents of the community who are imploring the Town of Brookhaven and Ward Melville Heritage Organization to devise a plan to Rebuild Harbor Road and Restore the Pond. Beyond the cultural and historical significance of losing the pond - it has been around since the 1800s - the collapse of a major thoroughfare in the neighborhood has led to dangerous driving conditions and delayed response times for emergency vehicles. Another big storm could cause even more catastrophic damage.

We have planned a rally for May 31st from 12-2 PM to unite the community in protest over the lack of progress in resolving this neighborhood hazard. We will meet on the sidewalk at the corner of Harbor Road and Main Street. ALL ARE WELCOME - those who have memories of feeding ducks at the pond, those whose personal or business interests rely on having a functioning road, and those who want to try to be part of the solution.
