Join basket maker Jenny Gracie from Making Space To Make for a delightful morning of willow weaving at Plymouth Leadworks (PL1 1TP). Learning to make a willow trivet/platter is the perfect project for anyone interested in working with willow or basketry, as it offers valuable skills that can be applied to larger projects if you develop a passion for weaving.
You will spend the morning in a small group of six, learning basketry techniques and creating your own trivet to take home. These trivets are not only practical in the kitchen but also look beautiful when not in use!
As part of the Hidden Figures Fayre at Plymouth Leadworks, basket maker Jenny Gracie will be running a special hands-on workshop on Friday 10th October. Be warned — there’s a real risk you’ll fall in love with willow weaving… if you haven’t already!
Alongside the workshops, Plymouth Leadworks will host an exhibition of portraits from Hidden Figures of the South West— a photography project celebrating individuals in under-recognised professions whose skills and knowledge are at risk of disappearing. From conservationists to traditional artisans, artists, and more, these portraits highlight the incredible people who help preserve our cultural heritage.
To further support and showcase these crafts, the Fayre will also feature a variety of stalls where visitors can meet makers, explore their work, and learn more about their processes.
